What is ultimate in short?

Ultimate Frisbee is a challenging and fun sport, which is played (by NUTS) in mixed teams of seven people, plus subs who rotate in and out. The object of the game is to receive, or catch, a disc (Frisbee) in a space designated as an end-zone. To get the disc to the end-zone players must throw the disc to one another. Running when in possession of the disc is not permitted. The defending team can earn the disc, a so-called turn-over, by intercepting it (by catching it or beating it to the ground) or by forcing the opponent to throw an incomplete pass. Physical contact is not permitted.
One of the most distinguishing characteristics of ultimate Frisbee is that there are no referees present during games, even on a high level. The idea behind this is that the players are considered to be good enough sportsmen to solve any problems that may occur when a foul is committed. While winning might be important, it must never be at the cost of the ‘Spirit of the Game’. Spirit is always important in Ultimate and can be described as love for the game, respect for the opponent, and especially enjoying yourself on the field without any brawls and fouls.

What does NUTS do?

NUTS is a mixed student team (guys & gals), and the team’s main goal is to enjoy playing ultimate together. To fulfill this goal we practice regularly to improve our skills both as a team, and on an individual level. With teammates at various experience levels, we are able to share knowledge about the sport. We believe that this provides an atmosphere in which new players will get inspired by the more experienced players and will have a lot of places to go to for tips and tricks.

Besides weekly trainings, NUTS plays competition and goes to many tournaments, both within the Netherlands and abroad. Because we want every player to be able to choose his/her own commitment to ultimate, each player decides for himself/herself with which activities he/she want to participate. Next to all the ultimate playing, we are also a student sports association, so going for drinks after training and monthly socials are also part of NUTS.

Okay, I want to be a NUT! What do I do now?

That is first of all great news and this question can be answered easy. First of all, just show up to training! You can join anytime of the year at practice. Contribution fee

One Semester: 45 Euro

Additional Costs

If you play a tournament or you play in the City League or Dutch League, you will have to pay some players fee. This depends on your personal situation, but roughly a tournament will cost around 50 Euros and the City and Dutch league 10 and 25 Euros respectively.

Gear

We recommend getting good shoes for playing Ultimate. This means soccer cleats for outdoor and handball or squash shoes for indoor. You can get these shoes in a price range from 30 to >100 Euros. We recommend Decathlon, they have good quality for a low price. You can also get shirts, socks and shorts there.

Since this year we have a special offer for each new member. The first tournament you want to go to as a new NUT will be paid for by NUTS! (players and team fee).
